Long Vowels & Vowel Teams

A long vowel says its own name — the a in cake, the e in me. The tricky part: each long sound can be spelled several ways. Here's every one, with audio.

Long vs short — the quick difference

A short vowel is the clipped sound in cat, bed, sit, hot, cup. A long vowel says its name: cake, me, bike, home, cube. Two things usually turn a vowel long: a silent e or a vowel team.
